Hi! My name is Danielle Roberson and I am one of the Campus Advertising Team Leaders at With Purpose: College Station. Along with my responsibilities to my team, I also organize a volunteer opportunity for the group to attend called Preemie Prints. Preemie Prints is a nonprofit organization that supports the families of premature babies and babies born critically ill. The most recent Preemie Prints meeting that With Purpose has attended was held at Baylor Scott & White Medical Center in College Station where we participated in a Sew N’ Craft. The goal of Sew N’ Crafts is to make gift bags that include items such as knitted hats and positioners for the families with babies currently in the NICU. Preemie Prints relies on the help of volunteers at Sew N’ Craft meetings to make as many items and gift bags for the affected families as possible.
Because I felt that this would be a great way for With Purpose to give back, I emailed our President, Courtney McIlvoy, asking her what she thought of the opportunity. She said it was a good idea and told me to send out a mass email to the organization. I proceeded to set up a Sign-Up Genius and type up an email to send to everyone. Once I had a general number of the members who would be attending, I emailed the director of Preemie Prints to let her know how many of us would be there.
One of the best parts about the Sew N’ Crafts is that it’s a fairly social volunteer project. We all have different jobs that involve working together, so we get to talk to members from other teams that we wouldn’t get to normally. For example, one person could be tracing a stencil onto a fabric that they would then give to someone else to cut out. That cut-out would then go to someone else to pin ribbon to in preparation for sewing. This teamwork allows for members to really get to know each other and possibly pick up new skills. At one Sew N’ Craft, one of our members even got to learn how to use a sewing machine!
In essence, my experience setting up and attending Sew N’ Crafts with With Purpose has been great and rewarding. Because of it, I have met more members and learned that I am horrible at pinning ribbons to fabric. ;)
