My name is Danielle Roberson and I’m the 2018-2019 President of With Purpose: College Station.
I joined WPCS in Fall of 2016, the first semester of my freshman year. I remember walking through the MSC Open House looking for an organization that wanted to make a difference in the childhood cancer community. After talking with members at the open house and attending an informational, it was clear to me that WPCS was the perfect fit. What I didn’t realize, however, was just how much this organization was going to mean to me.
My first semester at Texas A&M was a difficult time for me. But, With Purpose was, and has been, my light. I remember coming up with the idea of creating Snapchat filters for our events. I told our then President, Courtney McIlvoy, about it and she asked me if I wanted to head that project. Taken aback, but excited, I set up our organizations Snapchat account and created a filter for our ultimate frisbee tournament. At the conclusion of my first semester, our now former President Cole Stenholm encouraged me to apply for a leadership position. For the first time, a group of people put faith in me and encouraged me to explore my interests. For the first time, I had saw an opportunity to make a difference.
Fast forward to now.
We have been able to teach the Texas A&M student body about the meager funding childhood cancer receives and watch them choose to make a difference. Each of our events has been more and more successful, which has been an incredible growth to witness. We’ve been able to do extensive research on pediatric cancer research initiatives and propose them to WP National to donate funds to. We’ve written letters to our representatives expressing our support for the RACE 4 CHILDREN Act. We’ve joined the Coalition Against Childhood Cancer (CAC2) to broaden our network with other pediatric cancer initiatives. We’ve partnered with other on-campus organizations to educate other students about our cause and encourage them to act. We’ve hosted donation drives to benefit MD Anderson Cancer Center and hung out with patients to give them as much normalcy as possible.
WPCS has done so much in its 3 years of existence, and I can’t wait to take this further.
Our members are some of the most passionate people I’ve met, and I really believe this next semester is going to be something special. With such a large transition of leadership and anticipated growth, we are in a very good position to do more than we’ve ever done.
I want to begin my presidency by thanking some of the people who’ve gotten me here and who played an instrumental role in WPCS’s beginnings.
Courtney, President 2015 – 2017 & Cole, President 2017 – 2018 (co-founders):
Thank you for making WPCS more than a school project. You were two of the first people in College Station to truly invest in me as not only a member, but a person. I am so lucky to have been able to lead under you both and learn. You both have been instrumental in my college experience and I cannot thank you guys enough.
Dominique Smith, HR Director 2016 - 2018:
Thank you for being my right-hand gal from the get-go. You’ve been next to me throughout my rise in leadership within WPCS and have always been my cheerleader. I couldn’t have asked for a better friend during this process.
Erin Benson, Executive Director of WP National:
Thank you for investing in WPCS. In doing this, you’ve given me an opportunity to learn about a huge problem and the tools to do my best to fix it. The “live with purpose” philosophy you’ve created is now the underlying rhythm in my day-to-day life. The circumstances in which With Purpose was created were unfair and cruel, but your strength to turn them into something incredible is inspirational.
Thank you to everyone who got me here. I appreciate you all and will pour my heart into this organization so that we can get closer to providing safe, effective treatments for children with cancer.
